Understanding "Layer" in Graphic Software

Most of people when they use graphic software (like CorelDraw, Photoshop, InkScape, etc.) for the first time, will confuse with the term "Layer". Whereas, the "Layer" is used frequently when using graphic software. So, what is "Layer?"

Layer is the term used to describe the different levels at which you can place an object or image file. In the program you can stack, merge or define layers when creating a digital image. Layers can be partially obscured allowing portions of images within a layer to be hidden or shown in a translucent manner within another image, or you can use layers to combine two or more images into a single digital image. For the purpose of editing, working with layers allows you to go back and make changes within a layer as you work.

See the illustration below.

Now, prepare two papers that have different color (I use blue and black). Create some holes on the second paper like the picture below.

After that, move the second paper over the first paper.

So, you will get stacked paper like the picture below.

Some parts of the first paper will shown from the holes that we created before on the second paper. You can arrange the layer, like a papers; create the holes, make it transparent, move up or down, so you can get what the result do you want.

Still confuse about "Layer?" Feel free to leave your questions in the comment box.
